To empower women, banks are rolling out various schemes, giving discounts on housing and educations loans.
In an effort to give equal right to wife in property buying and owning decision, LIC Housing Finance has launched ‘Bhagya Lakshmi’ — a women-oriented scheme where the interest rate will be 0.25% lesser if the wife is the first co-applicant in housing loan.
Besides, banks such as IDBI, Central Bank of India, Overseas Bank, State Bank of India and Allahabad Bank are offering 0.5% subsidy to girl students on their education loans in comparison to male students.
“We want to give equal right to women in property. Therefore, we are offering 0.25% discount on housing loan. We are a getting good response. And people are also opting for it and seeking loans under this scheme by making their wives first co-applicants. We want to change people’s mindset by empowering more and more women,” said an official from LIC Housing Finance.
Personal finance expert Harshvardhan Roongta, who is the CEO of Apanapaisa.com, said the loan repayment record of women has been excellent.
“The banks are doing this as part of their social responsibility. Women are punctual in repaying any sort of loan. And these are good schemes which not only empower women financially, but give them legal rights also. Therefore, banks are coming forward and offering discounts to women on home and education loans,” he said.
